Meaning

'A Salty Dog' is a song by the British progressive rock band Procol Harum.Written by Gary Brooker and Keith Reid, it was released as the lead single off the band's 1969 album A Salty Dog.It was also included on the 1972 album Procol Harum Live: In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

It was the manager of the band, Guy Stevens, who came up with the band name: a friend of his had a cat called Procol Harum - at least that was what the cat's name sounded like. Later Stevens (who also thought up the band name Mott The Hoople ) made other attempts to attach a meaning to the name: according to him Procul Harun is Latin, meaning something like 'far beyond these things'. Along with Jimi, Moby Grape, The Beatles, there's Procol Harum. There is a great photo included of the original Procol: Ray Royer and Bobby Harrison included. Of course Ray is noted as the player on AWSoP but the focus goes to Trower. Conquistador and Repent Walpurgis are. PROCOL HARUM was one of many groups in the late 1960s who succumbed to the influence of psychedelia and - lacking any other model - imitated Bob Dylan in an attempt to come up with something.

A Salty Dog is found on the album The Best of Procol Harum [Fly].

'All hands on deck, we've run afloat' I heard the captain cry
'Explore the ship, replace the cook, let no one leave alive!'
Across the straits, around the Horn, how far can sailors fly?
A twisted path, our tortured course, and no one left alive
We sailed for parts unknown to man, where ships come home to die
No lofty peak, nor fortress bold, could match our captain's eye
Upon the seventh seasick day we made our port of call
A sand so white, and sea so blue, no mortal place at all
We fired the gun, and burnt the mast, and rowed from ship to shore
The captain cried, we sailors wept, our tears were tears of joy
Now many moons and many Junes have passed since we made land
A salty dog, this seaman's log, your witness my own hand
